Sheddon Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic Burlington takes pride in being an official clinic for Complete Concussion Management™ (CCMI), a renowned program dedicated to evidence-based concussion care. Through our affiliation with CCMI, we offer comprehensive concussion management services, from baseline testing to diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, catering to athletes of all levels.
What is a concussion?
A concussion refers to a disruption in neurological functioning resulting from a significant impact to the head or body, causing the brain to accelerate or decelerate within the skull. This disturbance leads to biochemical imbalances in brain cells, accompanied by temporary energy deficits and decreased blood flow. Symptoms may include loss of consciousness, headache, neck pain, nausea, dizziness, and balance issues.

Concussion treatment
In collaboration with CCMI, our Oakville and Burlington clinics offer a range of concussion treatment services and strategies, including:
- Comprehensive Baseline Testing: We provide the most thorough baseline testing available to establish pre-injury neurocognitive function, enabling accurate post-injury
comparisons. - Post-Injury Diagnosis and Management: Our team is adept at diagnosing concussions and managing injuries to ensure optimal recovery and safe return to activity.
- Concussion Rehabilitation: For individuals experiencing chronic symptoms (Post-Concussion Syndrome), we offer tailored rehabilitation programs aimed at restoring function and improving quality of life.
- Coach and Trainer Education: We offer education and certification programs for coaches and trainers to enhance their understanding of concussion management and facilitate safer sports environments.
In the immediate aftermath of a concussion, it is crucial to promptly remove the player from play and initiate a period of relative rest, both physically and cognitively. Research indicates that 24 to 48 hours of rest is typically recommended, although individualized assessment is necessary. Engaging in mental or physical activity shortly after a concussion may prolong recovery, underscoring the importance of cautious
management.
Subsequently, the International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport (2016) advocates for a gradual reintroduction of mental and physical activity under the guidance of a licensed healthcare practitioner trained in concussion management.
At Sheddon Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic Burlington, we are committed to delivering top-tier concussion care in alignment with CCMI standards. Our goal is to facilitate the safe return to learn, work, and play for individuals affected by concussions.

CCMI treatment overview

Pre-season/Baseline Testing
Pre-season/baseline testing involves a series of physical and cognitive tests to assess healthy brain function before injury. These tests create a benchmark for comparison in case of concussion. The brain is vulnerable to further injury when in a low energy state post-concussion, making baseline testing crucial. Not all baseline testing methods are equal, but CCMI offers evidence-based, comprehensive testing. Baseline information helps practitioners make safer return-to-play decisions. Contact us for more information on baseline testing suitability.
CCMI Concussion Tracker Smartphone Application
The CCMI Concussion Tracker smartphone app facilitates safer return-to-sport decisions for young athletes by capturing and sharing their concussion status in real time. Key features include reporting and tracking concussions, conducting sideline assessments, seamless communication, recording recovery status and timeline, scanning and sharing medical documents, and tracking daily symptoms for recovery progress. The app is available for free on the App Store and Google Play.

Additionally, CCMI offers free educational resources to increase concussion management awareness. Resources include a Concussion Handbook, Concussion Code of Conduct, Implementation Guide, educational infographics, and Concussion FAQs. These resources can be downloaded for free from the CCMI website. Download yours for free today at https://completeconcussions.com/resources/educational-resources/
